I love making aviator hats. I just think they’re so cute. They make great photo props for infants, toddlers, older kids, and even adults. I’ve made them for girls and boys. I made a slate colored one for my grandson Jett, and a hot pink one for my friend’s daughter Madeline. They both look adorable.

I decided my one year old grandson, Sadi, would look adorable in an Aviator Chick hat this Easter. I had to make him an Easter hat too, after all I made a Peek-a-Boo Bunny hat for his twin sister Harper. My daughter Jaime thought the Aviator Chick hat was so cute she wants one for her 2 year old son Jett too!

This hat is really easy to make. Other than chain and slip stitches it uses just 2 basic stitches, Single and Double crochet stitches.

The hat’s main color is of course yellow. I used Loops & Threads Impeccable #4 yarn in Butterscotch, but you can use any brand of yarn, like Red Heart Soft Baby Steps Yarn and any shade of yellow you have on hand. I prefer to use softer type yarn because my grandkids find regular yarn itchy and uncomfortable.

The front flap is made with Bernat Baby Blanket #6 Super Bulk yarn in white, if gives the hat extra texture and mimics the sheep wool lining used in some aviator hats. I used a J (6.00mm) hook for the hat and flap.

For the appliqued beak and goggles I used scraps of #4 worsted yarn in carrot and black and worked them with a G (4.25mm) hook. I find it doesn’t really matter if you use regular or soft yarn for appliques as long as they aren’t directly in contact with bare skin.

The front flap is tacked in place with 2 wooden buttons and the eyes are .99” wiggly eyes you can buy in Walmart’s craft department. I opted to use the wiggly eyes, which I glued on with Aleene’s Tacky Glue, because I thought it would be cuter than using crocheted appliques like I do on other hats. You can of course use crocheted appliques for the eyes.

If you’re going to make the eyes from crocheted appliques you will have to make 2 large white circles, and 2 small circles for the pupils in blue, black, or brown.

The pattern given for this hat is for a toddler size hat and measures 17” circumference when finished. I will fit a head circumference between 18” – 20”. You can make it smaller or larger. To make it for an infant (14” – 16” circumference) stop the increase rounds once you’ve reached the round of 35 stitches, and work only 10 rows.

To make it larger by adding more increase rounds after round 6 (42 stitches). To do this add a total of 7 stitches to each round until you reach the size you want, and work a total of 15 rows. (increase of 7 per round is made by adding 1 DC to the pattern after working the 2DCs in the round. Example row 6 is *2DC, DC in next 4 stitches*, row 7 would be *2DC, DC in next 5 stitches*, etc)

Earflaps for smaller size – decrease the first row by 2. Then follow the pattern of decrease and even rows until you get to row that has only 4 stitches.

For earflaps for larger size – increase the first row by 2. The follow the pattern of decrease and even rows until you get to the row that has only 4 stitches.

Stitches:

Ch = chain

Sl St = Slip Stitch

SC = Single Crochet

DC = Double Crochet

Special notes: Ch 1 at the end of each round is a turning stitch, it does not count as the first stitch of the next round.

Goggles are worked in rounds until you get to the straps, those are worked in rows. You will not fasten off after working the 2 rounds of the googles, you will continue on to work the rows for the straps. You will make each side of the goggles separately and slip stitch them together in the middle as seen in the picture. The first round is worked in the circle made with chains.

Supplies:

Hook size J 6.00mm

Hook size G 4.25mm

#4 Medium yarn in Yellow

#6 Super Bulky yarn in White

#4 Medium yarn in Orange

#4 Medium yarn in Black

2 wood buttons

2 .99” Wiggly Eyes

Aleene’s Tacky Glue

Hat:

Ch 2

Rd. 1: 7 SC in 2nd. Ch from hook, sl st to top of first stitch. (7SC)

Rd. 2: Ch 2 (counts as first st), DC in same st, 2 DC in each stitch around, sl st to top of Ch 2. (14 DC)

Rd. 3: Ch 2 (counts as first st), DC in same st, *2 DC in next st, DC in next st*, repeat **, sl st to top of Ch 2. (21 DC)

Rd. 4: Ch 2 (counts as first st), DC in same st, *2 DC in next st, DC in next 2 sts*, repeat **, sl st to top of Ch 2. (28 DC)

Rd. 5: Ch 2 (counts as first st), DC in same st, *2 DC in next st, DC in next 3 sts*, repeat **, sl st to top of Ch 2. (35 DC)

For infant size this is your last increase round. Work 5 more even rounds of DC in each st around (35DC) then continue on to the front flap.

For larger sizes this is where you will add increase rounds until you reach the size you need. Then work enough even rounds until you have a total of 15 rounds. Then continue on to the front flap.

Rd. 6: Ch 2 (counts as first st), DC in same st, *2 DC in next st, DC in next 4 sts*, repeat **, sl st to top of Ch 2. (42 DC)

Rd. 7: Ch 2 (counts as first st), DC in same st, DC in next 14 sts, *2DC in next st, DC in next 14 sts* 2 times, sl st to top of Ch 2. (45 DC). Do not fasten off.

Rd. 8 – 12: Ch 2, DC in each st around, sl st to top of Ch 2. (45 DC)

For infant size work only 10 rounds as mentioned above. For larger sizes work the even rounds until you have a total of 15 rounds.

You will now work the first earflap. The earflaps are worked in rows.

Row 1: Sl st in the next 6 st, ch 2 (counts as 1SC), SC in the next 13 sts, ch 1, turn. (14SC)

Row 2: SC decrease over the first 2 sts, SC in next 10 sts, SC decrease over the last 2 sts, ch 1, turn. (12SC)

Row 3: SC in each st across, ch 1, turn. (12SC)

Row 4: SC decrease over the first 2 sts, SC in next 8 sts, SC decrease over the last 2 sts, ch 1, turn. (10SC)

Row 5: SC in each st across, ch 1, turn. (10SC)

Row 6: SC decrease over the first 2 sts, SC in next 6 sts, SC decrease over the last 2 sts, ch 1, turn. (8SC)

Row 9: SC decrease over the first 2 sts, SC in next 2 sts, SC decrease over the last 2 sts, fasten off and weave in ends. (4SC)

For the 2nd. Earflap count 12 sts on the last round worked, count from the last stitch of the first row of the first earflap. Attach yarn to the next stitch and work the earflap the same way you did the first.

Front flap and border:

Front flap is worked in the front of the hat between the earflaps. Attach super bulky yarn to the stitch on last round of the main hat, after the last stitch of the first earflap.

Holding 2 sides of goggles together with back sides facing each other, attach them together with 4 sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing:

Fold front flap up and attach to the main hat by stitching 2 buttons on either side, see picture for placement.

Stitch beak just above front flap, bottom tip of beak should slightly overlap the front flap.

Stitch google lenses to the front of the hat, wrap straps around the hat and stitch to the back of the hat.

Glue wiggly eyes to the center of each lens opening of the googles.
