Last week I made a Spring Throw Blanket for my daughter Jaime’s new house. She lives in Colorado and can definitely use it. I had found the yarn on sale at my local craft store and fell in love with the colors. I just had to have them even though I had no idea what I would make with them. Then after moving into her new home my daughter bought a new white leather couch and requested a blanket to go with it, the old one I had made her 3 years ago just wouldn’t do. It was the perfect time to use my new yarns, Red Heart’s Aruba Sea and Soft White! I could just picture the colors on her sofa, specially after she told me her accent colors were blues and greens.
After making the blanket I still had more yarn and I thought why not make matching Spring Throw Pillows for the sofa! I had just enough yarn left over to make a pillow of each color.
The pillows are made of 2 crocheted granny squares that are attached together to make a pillow case. The squares are worked exactly the same way the blanket squares are made. The only difference is the way the squares are attached together.
Like the blanket the squares use the Jacob’s Ladder technique giving them that cabled look. I’ve fallen in love with this technique and have used it to make my grandson Dion a blanket and legwarmers for his mom, my other daughter Jenny.
I hope you love this pattern as much as I do. If you aren’t familiar with the Jacob’s Ladder technique here’s a short video I made to show you how to do it! (I demonstrate on the legwarmers but it’s worked the same way for the square.)

At this point it does not look like a square at all, but we’ll take care of that in the next round
#9. Ch 3, DC next 3 sts, *starting from ch 7 in rd 1 weave ch 7 into each other to form a cable , sc in last ch 7 loop at the top of work, DC next 16 sts, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc in ch 2 sp), DC next 16 sts, **repeat 2x, weave together, DC next 16, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc in ch 2 sp) DC ne t 12 sts, join (144 DC)
Insert chains from Rd. 2 into chains from Rd. 1 from back to front.
Continue with chains from Rd. 3, insert into chain loop you just formed.
Continue with remaining chains until you have inserted the chains from Rd. 8 into the loop of Rd. 7.
It’s like making a daisy chain!
Once you’ve inserted all the chains into each other you will end up with a loop at the top of the work.
Insert hook into the top loop and work a SC.
#10. Ch 2, hdc next 22 sts, (2hdc, ch 2, 2hdc in ch 2 sp), *hdc next 37, (2hdc, ch 2, 2hdc in ch 2 sp) * repeat 2x, (2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp), hdc next 14, join. Fasten off if this is your first square.
If it is your second square do not fasten off. Instead continue on to assemble the pillow.
Assembly:
SC in each stitch making sure you go thru and work the SC in both squares.
Work 3 SC in the corner 2ch space.
Attach 3 sides this way.
When you get to the fourth side insert your pillow form then close off with SC. Fasten off and weave in ends.
